GOALIE WARS

GOALIE WARS PICTURES

INFORMATION and RULES

Thirteen years ago the Rogue Valley Cup Soccer Tournament was the first tournament in the Northwest and most likely the entire West Coast to initiate "Goalie Wars". Goalie Wars is and has been a main stay at the Rogue Valley

Cup every year on Saturday night at North Medford High School from 9:00 to 11:00 pm , under the lights. Yes 9:00 pm is a late time to start but remember that the last games do not finish until 8:15 pm at all fields, so this allows those keepers to make it over to NMHS in time to participate too. It is a "free event" to the goalies and the spectators. As you can see in the pictures we have 6 goals running simultaneously. We also give the first place finisher of each age group and gender a Premium Sondico Keeper Jersey and each second place finisher a Premium pair of Sondico Keeper Gloves. We start with the U-10, U-11, U-12 boys and girls at 9:00 pm so they can finish quickly and get back to the hotel at decent hour. The second wave is the U-13, 14, 15's and the final wave is the U-16, 17, 19's.

You can sign your keeper for Goalie Wars at the Mandatory Check in Friday night at North Medford High Gym from 7:00 to 10:00 pm or at tournament Head Quarters on Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. We ask that you sign up only one keeper per team, but if your team has a "true" 2nd keeper they can be signed up as alternate, but there is no guarantee that any or all alternates will be allowed.

We encourage all tournament participating keepers to come out show their skills and bring their entire entourage of players, parents and siblings to cheer them on. We will typically see 3000 people out there over the course of the evening. The food and sales booths will be open too, so if you need a sweatshirt or a hot coco, we got you covered.

GOALIE WARS

Rules of Play: (2002 Revision)

Two goals are set 17 yards apart for U-10, U-11 and U-12 and 27 yards apart for players U-13 thru U-19. The first goalie to score (3) three goals wins. For U-10, U-11 and U-12, the first goalie to score two goals wins. Goalies have 4 minutes to score. If the time is up and the score is 0 V 1, the goalie with 1 point wins and advances to face new opponents. If the time is up and the score is tied (e.g.: 1 V 1) play continues until the next goal wins.

Play starts after a flip of a coin. The winner chooses whether to kick/throw or receive. The ball is started with the goalie standing on the goal line in his or her goal. The goalie is allowed to take up to four steps or "leaps" and place the ball on the ground and kick it. If the ball is thrown, the ball must be thrown on the 3rd "leap" and all forward progress completed on the 4th step. If the ball is thrown on the 4th , and a 5th step is taken, the ball will be forfeited to the other goalie for re-starting.

If the ball fully passes the opposing goalie's goal line, it is a score. If the ball is caught and controlled, the goalie with the ball has up to four steps to get off a shot or throw. If a ball is punched out, and it would normally be a corner kick, the ball is returned to the opposing goalie to start from his or her goal line. The play is non-stop and the ball does not have to be stopped to be kicked. If a ball is "fumbled" and then rolls before it is controlled, the goalie does not have four steps from the point it is controlled. If from the viewpoint of the referee, the ball was intentionally advanced by blocking the ball and then allowing it to roll forward. The goalie must take the ball back to the goal line and restart with up to four steps taken. If the ball is "fumbled" beyond the center line it cannot be retrieved. At no time can a goalie enter in the other goalie's "half" of the field. Any ball kicked or thrown out of bounds is returned to the opposing goalie. If a goalie crosses the centerline or takes too many steps, the ball is instantly forfeited to the other goalie.

Team members and parents should support their goalie, but not coach their goalie.

The referee's word is final!
